About the product

Our inhouse designed CTS Fuel Recirculation Unit was developed to prevent diesel fuel inside a storage tank from getting stagnant - particularly those with low usage such as generator back up tanks, that whilst not regularly used are of vital importance. When fuel sits stagnant for long periods of time, microbial growth known as diesel bugs begin to form, join together and create a nasty biofilm. By keeping the fuel moving and free of the contaminants that can get sucked into pumps, equipment and vehicles, costly damage and downtime can be avoided.

The fuel storage tank circulation system draws the fuel up from the front of the tank through the magnetic conditioner, which stuns the bugs, breaking them down into a size that will pass through a two stage water and particle filtration process to remove any impurities. The cleaner fuel is then circulated back into the tank, before the bugs have been able to group and create the nasty sludge.

The CTS storage tank recirc unit has an input for connecting to an alarm/gauge to detect a low fuel level and a leak probe for a drip tray (if installed). Benefiting from a control panel with large, coloured lights, any issues that need to be dealt with i.e. filter blocked, low fuel level, a leak or a system fault can be easily diagnosed. If the system identifies any of the above issues, the pump will turn off until necessary action has been taken as a safeguard. Complete with two BMS outputs, the control panel can also send a signal of this to warn users remotely.

There are two versions of CTS Fuel Tank Circulation System; one for circulating (50lpm) a maximum of 3000 litres per day for tanks up to 40,000 litres, and another for circulating (70lpm) a maximum of 4000 litres per day for tanks up to 70,000 litres. Tank contents should be recirculated every 28 days to prevent bacteria colonies from forming. Our systems are set to turn over 1.5 times the tank contents every 28 days to include a safety margin.

Watch the video in the tab below for more information on the costly problem of bugs in fuel.

CTS Mains Multi-Compartment Fuel Tank Alarm Box Only c/w 3 Relays

The CTS Mains Operated Multi-Compartment Fuel Tank Alarm system has three functions; to detect and warn of a tank overfill, a high/low liquid level and a bund leak. If this fuel tank alarm identifies any of these issues, the channel in question will light up on the alarm’s screen, combined with an alarm sounder and flashing orange strobe, which provides the user with a clear warning of the activated tank state. Each channel can be configured in any of the three functions High, Low or Bund, enabling the complete customisation of these fuel tank alarms based upon the user's requirements with a very simple set of electrical jumpers.

Options are available complete with three relays, to allow external equipment to be connected to each channel of the tank level alarm such as building management system for remote monitoring. This level and bund alarm also has the additional feature of controlling the pump from the relays (if fitted). When the fuel storage tank contents are 'low', the pump switches on and stays on until 'high' is reached. This is commonly used for ensuring generator day tanks do not run empty.

The CTS Mains Fuel Tank Level Alarm box has undergone a redesign for the convenience of the tank manufacturer/installer. It benefits from the same functionality the market knows and loves, but now with external mounting lugs for installation without opening up the tank alarm box, captive screws to prevent accidentally dropping and losing them in the bund and improved cable gland positioning.

If you require a tank level alarm for something other than diesel or light oil, we also supply a water and chemical alarm probe, and a high viscosity oil tank level probe – which is also suitable for AdBlue as well as high viscosity oils. Please see the accessories table for more information.

Please note: Codes SWS5000 and SWS5001 do not come complete with probes. Please view the accessories table to select the combination you need. All cables must be free of electrical noise

Why are less frequently used tanks more at risk of bugs in fuel?

Due to the increasing level of bio-content in today's diesel, small quantities of water will be present in any fuel tank. However, in a tank that is used regularly, the fuel is naturally circulated meaning that the contaminants can be dealt with by conventional filters.

However, for tanks used less frequently, the same fuel sits stagnant for long periods of time and the bugs begin to grow, multiply and join together to create a nasty sludge. It is this “biofilm” that can block filters, damage pumps and get sucked into machinery causing equipment failure, downtime and costly repairs. Research shows the bugs in fuel begin to form colonies in around 28 days.

Can the fuel recirculation unit be retrofitted to an existing fuel tank?

Recirculation units are most commonly installed at tank manufacturer stage due to the pipework required to fit it. There is no reason however why it cannot be retrofitted to an existing tank if the installer fits the required drop pipes at the front and back of the tank, ensuring complete circulation of the contents.

We do advise that if it is installed onto an existing tank, the contents first undergo a fuel polishing process, as there is a chance that the biofilm that the recirculation unit works to prevent may already have been formed.

How long should the fuel filters last before I need to replace the elements?

Unfortunately, there is no exact answer to this question as it all depends on the level of contamination in your fuel. The dirtier the fuel in your tank, the quicker the filter will get full. We advise that you always have a spare filter element on site so that you experience no downtime if your filter is full and blocks.

If you’re experiencing your filter elements blocking a lot quicker than usual, then this may be down to changes in the bio content of diesel. Read our article to find out more.
